Regret (Weekly Recovery Reflection)
Regret can also be a guide—a reminder of our values and the choices we want to make moving forward.
Quote
“Regret doesn’t remind us that we did badly—it reminds us that we know we can do better.”
– Kathryn Schulz
My Thoughts
Regret is a heavy emotion, but it also holds lessons. In recovery, it’s tempting to dwell on past mistakes or missed opportunities, letting regret weigh us down. Yet regret can also be a guide—a reminder of our values and the choices we want to make moving forward. By facing regret with honesty and self-compassion, we can use it as fuel for growth instead of a chain holding us back.
Action for the Week
Take a moment to reflect on one regret. Ask yourself: What can I learn from this? Then, focus on one step you can take this week to move forward with intention, leaving the regret in the past where it belongs.
Regret is just so hard to get beyond sometimes. I will always regret the role my drinking played in the demise of my marriage. And no matter how long I’m sober and, regardless of whether I ever find someone else, I’ll always regret that I managed to fuck it up to the point she said it (and I) wasn’t worth it any more.
